The difference between Electric cylinder and Hydraulic cylinder

2024 09/20

In the modern industry automatic area, The electric cylinder and hydraulic cylinder are two types of common actuators, they both play an important role in different applications. Although both of them can achieve linear motion, there are significant differences in working principle, performance feature.

1. Working Principle

Electric cylinder is the device which would convert the rotating motion of the motors into linear motion through ball screw, nut and other mechanical transmission mechanism. It is usually composed of motor, ball screw, cylinder, sensor and other component. Motor drives ball screw to rotate, the nut on the ball screw drives the rod to move in a straight line along the cylinder. By controlling the speed and steering of the motors, the motion speed and position of the electric cylinder could be precisely controlled.
Hydraulic cylinder uses the pressure energy of the liquid to achieve linear motion. It is mainly composed of cylinder, piston, piston rod, seal kits, inlet and outlet oil hole, etc. When hydraulic oil enters cylinder through oil inlet hole, the piston and rod are pushed out; when hydraulic oil returns from oil outlet hole, the piston and rod retract under the action of the external payload and oil return pressure.

2. Performance Features

(1) Precise and Control

Electric cylinder has higher accuracy and better control performance. Since its movement is achieved through the precise control of the motor, positioning accuracy can achieve micron level, and complex motion and speed control can be achieved. The accuracy of hydraulic cylinder is relatively low, affected by the leakage of the oil, oil temperature change and other factors, the control accuracy is hard to ensure.

(2) Movement Speed

The hydraulic cylinder usually has faster moving speed.

(3) Thrust and Payload capacity

Hydraulic cylinder can provide large thrust and load capacity, suitable for heavy load and large torque working environment. The thrust and load capacity of the electric cylinder is relatively small, and it is generally suitable for light load and small and medium torque applications.

(4) Speed adjustment

The speed range of the electric cylinder is wide, which can achieve low speed smooth operation and high speed movement, and the speed adjustment is more convenient. The speed adjustment of the hydraulic cylinder is relatively complicated, and crawling is easy to occur at low speed, and the flow and pressure of the hydraulic system are limited at high speed.

(5) Reliability and maintenance

The structure of the electric cylinder is relatively simple, there is no complex hydraulic system, so the reliability is high and the maintenance cost is low. The hydraulic cylinder needs regular inspection and replacement of seals, hydraulic oil, etc., and the maintenance work is more complicated, and the hydraulic system is prone to leakage and other failures.

(6) Environmental adaptability

The electric cylinder has relatively low requirements for the environment and can work in harsh environments, such as high temperature, low temperature, humidity, dust and so on. The hydraulic cylinder has high requirements for the environment, especially the cleanliness and temperature of the hydraulic oil, otherwise it is easy to affect the normal operation of the system.

In summary, the electric cylinder and hydraulic cylinder have their own advantages and disadvantages. In practical applications, it is necessary to select the suitable actuator according to the specific working requirements, load characteristics, precision demands, environment conditions and other factors.
