What is the lead screw? How to Choose?

2024 04/08

Ball screw lead, also known as pitch, equals to the distance of linear movement of the nut every circle the screw made. The common lead is 1,2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40mm. Small and medium-sized lead products are generally only 5, 10mm. Large lead is generally 16,20,25,32,40. The screw lead is related to the linear speed, in the case of a certain input speed, the larger the lead, the faster the speed. It`s better to try to choose 5 and 10mm.

Selection of the lead is related to the required speed of movement, system and so on. You can choose from:4,5,6,8,10,12,20. When the specifications are larger, the lead can be generally larger (mainly considering the load bearing tooth thickness). If the speed meets, you can choose a smaller lead (conducive to improving control accuracy); For the requirements of high-speed occasions, the lead can be more than 20. The lead for grinding screws can generally be about equal to the nominal diameter (limited by the grinding helix angle of lift), such as 32 (32 * 32 ),40 (40 * 40) and so on. Of course,it can also be larger (non-grinding, but seldom considered). The larger the lead, the larger the rotational component force under the same conditions, then the cycle error is amplified, and the faster the speed.

Therefore, the general high speed requires flexibility, and instead of the precision claims, making the gap requirements become less meaningful (lead precision deviation increases). Therefore, large lead screw is generally a single nut.

The pitch of a screw is the distance between two adjacent threads. Pitch and lead are related but not equivalent concepts. Many people regard pitch and lead the same. The concept of lead is that the screw or nut rotates one circle, the nut moves above the screw. If it is a single-head ball screw, the pitch and lead value is the same, if it is a multi-head ball screw, the lead = pitch multiplied by the number of heads of the screw. If the screw moves four (or five) helixes per turn of the nut, then it means that the screw is a four-line (or five-line) screw, commonly known as four-head (or five-head) screw.
